The Kambashu Institute is a Permaculture learning centre by and for shack dwellers in Windhoek. Our signature project is a so called ‘food circle’ which is a planting bed around a compost pit. People can grow trees and vegetables using their grey water (omeya galonga nale). Our team monitors all food circles and provides consultancy, seeds, seedlings, compost and more if needed. Participants who have grown their food circle for over 1 year become members of the ‘Star Club’ and are invited to training and events on a regular basis. At the beginning of 2024, Star Club members are growing over 180 food circles in Windhoek’s informal settlements.
